October 16, 1937 – February 18, 2021
A loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend went to his eternal home on Thursday, February 18, 2021. He was 83 years old. Vertis proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from December 1954 to December 1962. He was a retired carpenter from local 1098. Vertis loved gardening and spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. He leaves behind to cherish his memories his son, Vertis “Bubba” Melvin Crowder, Jr. and wife Cindy; daughter, Sonya Akridge and husband George; sister, Elois Wheat; six grandchildren, Johnathan and wife Nikki, Joshua and wife Kaci, Alyssa and husband Tyler, Amber and husband Charles, Tyler, Ryan; eight great grandchildren, Lucas, Londyn, Hadley, Thea, Lawson, Kyli, Chloe, Brayleigh; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Visitation will be held at Unity Prayer Center on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 from 5pm until 8pm. Visitation resumes at the church on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 from 9am until Funeral Service at 11am, conducted by Rev. Joey Mack. Burial will follow in Colyell Community Cemetery. Pall bearers will be his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years, Joy Ann Crowder; daughter, Shelia Bourg; parents, Spears and Ola Crowder; sister, Shirley; and two brothers, Windell and Marvin.
