October 12, 1926 ~ March 24, 2021
Cornelia (Mama Connie) Marguerite Simmons Glorioso, RN, age 94, peacefully continued on her life long journey to the Lord on Thursday, March 24, 2021, following her body’s (but never her love or spirit’s) decline, at home surrounded by her family. The beloved daughter of the late George and Mildred Simmons (who named her after the first Gentile to become a Christian), she was born in Franklinton, La., but lived her adult life in the New Orleans area. She graduated from the Mather School of Nursing in New Orleans in 1949, graduating first in her class and receiving the highest and only academic award given at her graduation, the Richard Williamson Pediatric Award. She was the last surviving nurse of her graduating class. She met the love of her life, the late Lawrence W. Glorioso, Jr., as one of her patients, and told him that she was going to marry him. After a romantic two-year courtship, she married him 69 years ago on February 4, 1952.
Cornelia was always a loving sister and mother to everyone she met. She was not only a compassionate nurse to her hospital patients, until she retired from East Jefferson General Hospital, but also a true Christian nurse to the body and soul of everyone she met for her entire life. Connie was a long-time, faithful Munholland United Methodist Church member and member of the Friendship Bible Study Class. Connie was a Bible study leader for many years and was well-known throughout the congregation for her loving welcoming of everyone, most often greeting others with “How are you angel?” “I love you!” and one of “Connie’s kisses.” Her Munholland family graciously honored her with the “Stephen Lifelong Service Award.” She was a wonderful example of God’s love, and she will always hold a special place in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known her.
Mama Connie is survived by her son, Daryl George Glorioso, JD, PM (Melissa); grandsons Daryl Christopher Glorioso and Jonathan Ian Burke, PhD, RN (Stephanie); great-grandchildren Christian Burke and Madison Burke; nieces and nephew LeAnn Stokes (Lowell), Pamela Killingsworth, Melissa Ensminger, Joy Kelt, and Michael Glorioso. Mama Connie is also survived by brothers, sisters, and children through God and her love who are too numerous to name. She is predeceased by her husband Lawrence W. Glorioso, Jr.; son Lawrence W. Glorioso, III, MD. (Lauren); and brothers George Simmons, Jr. (late Gladys Johnson) and Truman D. Simmons, MD (Edna).
Mama Connie will be forever loved and remembered by her all her loved ones. Her spirit and her love will forever be entwined with, and a comfort to, all who knew her. A Memorial Service of Cornelia’s loving life will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2021, 1:00 PM, visitation at Noon, at Munholland United Methodist Church, 1201 Metairie Road, Metairie, La. 70005. Cornelia asks that in lieu of flowers, please, simply do something good for someone with love.
