Earnest “Ernie” Dow Powell, 82, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away after a long battle with cancer on April 16, 2021 at his home in Walker, LA. Ernie was a born again Christian saved by his faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. He was an avid reader and loved animals, music and old cars. He was born December 6, 1938 in Cecilia, KY and reared in Louisville, KY. He moved to Baton Rouge in his early 20’s and remained in this area until his passing. He worked for Ford dealerships for many years ending that career as the Service Manager at Tangilena Motors in Kentwood, LA. He was a small business owner of Warranty Claims Service and Powell Hot Shot Trucking Co. Ernie is survived by the love of his life and wife of 55 years, Martha Harrison Powell; son, Floyd H. Powell of Jarreau; daughter, June Powell of Livonia; stepdaughter, Judy K. Simon of Baton Rouge; stepsister, Diana Hammer (Terry) of Louisville, KY. He had 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jane Victoria Powell, Palatka FL; and stepdaughter Debra K Palazzo of Watson; his mother, Lorene Mercer Powell; father S J Powell and stepmother, Addie Mae Powell; stepbrothers, William and Harold Swift; and stepsister, Joyce Gerkins all of Louisville, KY. Visitation will be held at Seale Funeral Home, Denham Springs, Tuesday, April 20, from 1 p.m. until service at 3 p.m., officiated by Dr. David Lane. Burial will follow in Denham Springs Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cancer Services of Baton Rouge, 550 Lobdell Ave, Baton Rouge, LA 70806 or Hospice of Baton Rouge, 3600 Florida Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA 70806.     Martha, I am so sorry for your loss of Ernie. You were certainly a couple made for each other. While his suffering is over, I know you will miss him dearly.

    I am so sorry for your loss of Ernie. You two were a beautiful couple. Losing Debbie was so difficult & I’m sure you saw Ernie suffer with cancer before his passing. Please know you & your family are in my thoughts & prayers. Love, Kay Burns Hodges
