June 10, 1970 ~ September 11, 2022

Laura Helen (Hunerjager) Crochet, 52, went to be with her Lord on September 11, 2022 with her family by her side. Born on June 10, 1970, in Houston, Texas, and moved to Baton Rouge with her family in 1971.

Laura faced life bravely with a smile and a hug. Every day she thanked God for waking up, and her daily goal was to make someone smile. She also lived by her motto that “you have to have a laugh with every cry.” She lived a life of caring for others and service. Laura always had a strong work ethic and was able to accomplish many different types of work. However, she was most proud of being an EMT and volunteer for the East Side Fire Department, and working in Loss prevention. She also worked at the 13th Gate for 13 years, but considered it more than a job, it was a second home and family. She championed efforts to help the police. In 2015, she suffered an AVM rupture, brain surgery and results, but overcame it. So the journey began.  Laura became a part of the LSU Speech Therapy Program where she learned how to deal with her Aphasia. Laura’s interest in the workings of the brain inspired her to be a teacher. The program was improved due to her impact and she was able to actually work with senior and graduate students to teach them to understand Aphasia from the patient’s perspective. Her spirit, her smiles, and her unique talent for making people smile became her mission. “She gave the best hugs.”

No one who met Laura would forget her with her multi colored mohawk, her hugs, smiles, and “I’m your HPA.” Thanksgiving will never be the same without her.

Laura is survived by her mother, Jean Lockwood Kelly; her son, Steven Morgan and his wife Rachael; daughters, Alexis Broussard, and Jaclynn Crochet; brothers, Leo Hunerjager and Paul Kelly; and sisters, Linda Loudenslager and her husband Richard, and Cheryl Ducote Breaux. She was known affectionately as Lola to her grandchildren and nieces and nephews.  Her grandchildren, Oliver, Rose, Genevieve, and Elowyn Morgan, and Jaden, Bailey, and Ava Broussard; niece Joslyn Loudenslager and nephews, Connor and Nolan Loudenslager and Dane Hunerjager; niece Kacie Tannehill and nephews Matt and Ben Ducote, will all  miss her. She was preceded in death by her father Leo H. Hunerjager Jr. and stepfather John (Jack) Kelly.

The family would like to thank the many doctors who treated her throughout her illnesses. Laura considered them her family and her heart. The nurses and staff of the Butterfly Wing of Hospice Baton Rouge took amazing and loving care of her on the last leg of her difficult journey. We cannot thank them enough.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Laura’s memory to Kelli’s Kloset, Hospice of Baton Rouge (Butterfly Wing), the Cancer Society of Baton Rouge, or St. Vincent DePaul.

A celebration of her life and church services will be held Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Christ Community Church, 26574 Juban Rd, Denham Springs, LA. Visitation with the family will be from 10am to 11am, church service from 11am to 12pm, and 12pm to 1pm for fellowship.
