Born in Hazlehurst, MS, she relocated to Baton Rouge, LA in 1958 where she began her career at Dixon Memorial. She made several lifelong friends there who stayed with her all these years. She finished her career at Baton Rouge General and Labcorp.
She was a devout Christian and member of Walker Baptist Church. She loved Jesus and loved to share her love of Jesus with everyone.
She will be remembered and greatly missed for her clever wit and practical jokes, southern country cooking, especially fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, carrot cake, and her famous Christmas cookies. Most of all, we will remember her loving and giving heart.
She is survived by her son, Darrell Matthews (Vicki), daughter, Dawn Richmond (Brian), step children, Rachel Gordon (Kenneth), Ronnie Weeks, Sr., Janet Curtis (Dewayne), grandchildren, Derek Matthews (Lauren), Morgan Matthews, Christopher Richmond, Caroline Richmond, great-granddaughters Mia and Hayden Matthews, and brother, Bennett Leroy Cliburn.
She is proceeded in death by her parents, Walter and Theola Cliburn, first husband, Billy Matthews, son, Randal Matthews, brother James Cliburn, and her first and last love, Jerry Weeks, who passed just days before.
A very special thanks goes to caretakers, Cathy, Jennifer, Kendra, and Paris, as well as nurse Stacy, Contina, Meredith, and the staff of Hospice of Baton Rouge. Our family greatly appreciates Chaplains Samantha and Todd who provided genuine comfort and support to us all.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 from 9:00am – 11:00 with a funeral service to begin at 11:00 am at Seale Funeral Home. Burial will immediately follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.

Dear Dawn and Darrell,
I am saddened by the passing of your beautiful and beloved mother, Mrs. Laverne. I have some lovely memories of her from my childhood and from working for her at Dixon Memorial. I remember her for her beautiful soul, kindness and her Southern cooking. May the Lord comfort you all during this difficult time.
