Laura Gwendolyn Davis, 72, of Baton Rouge, LA. entered eternity on August 16, 2024. Having survived a fight with cancer, she died in her home from natural causes.
She was born on May 24, 1952, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Melvin I. Davis and Betty Lou Trosper Davis. She attended Omaha Technical High School. Laura was a seamstress by vocation, and also served as a motivational speaker. Throughout her life, Laura impacted the lives of many, providing support and guidance, and being a beacon of faith and strength. She was a member of Healing Place Church.
Laura was preceded in death by her mother and father, her brother Eldridge O. Davis, and Sidney Gills, the love of her life. She is survived by her brother Melvin I. Davis, Jr.; her sisters Maxine Jones, Charlene Berry, and Sarah Davis; and a host of nieces and nephews, most notably, her beloved Ronnell Davis, with whom she had a profound and sacred bond. She also leaves behind her sisters from LCIW that hold dear her memory and legacy. Finally, Laura had always hoped that she would be reunited with the two children for whom she gave life, born Donald and Kimberlynn Davis. Because her son and daughter had been placed in a closed adoption in the 1970’s the agency was not able to connect Laura with them, but she prayed a miracle would bring them together, until the last days of her life.
A Celebration of Life service will be held to honor Laura on September 21 starting at 10 a.m. The service will be at Healing Place Church at 19202 Highland Rd., in Baton Rouge, LA. Family and friends can send flowers directly to the church for display at the service. Light refreshments will be available, and attendees are encouraged to bring desserts and appetizers to contribute to a potluck reception. The organizers of the service are asking that anyone that may have photos of Laura, particularly prior to 2019, to contact Elena Encarnacion at (334) 530-0990 or email them to elena.encarnacion@gmail.com so that we may include them in a photo slideshow.

Vert always called me her Indian. One day I washed my hair and put it into two plaits and from that day, over 15 years ago, I was her Indian. I will miss you Vertie. Rest Well
