I wish I would have been able to get up and speak at Barbara’s service and hope it isn’t too late to say what I would have been able to say then. Barbara was one of my two older sisters. Sadly, both of them passed less than two months of each other. We didn’t see this coming. Barbara was 7 years older than me and I was truly blessed to have her. When she started working at Morgan and Lindsey as a teenager, for pennies per hour back then, she would buy things for me that I never knew I needed. I never asked her for anything, she just somehow knew. She would make sure my clothes matched and my hair was fixed before going to church. She gave me lots of pointers for drawing, although I never felt I could measure up to the talent that she had. I remember her drawing of the WTIX Tiger that won her the date with Fabian! It was amazing! I picture of the baby giraffe was my favorite! She was awesome at such a young age and such a perfectionist. After she and Charlie were married, I stayed with her for a few months when Charlie had to be away in the Air Force. It was then that she taught me how to sew. Up until that time my mother’s sewing machine was off limits, but after my mother saw what I was capable of, she allowed me to use her machine. I was in the middle of the siblings along with my brother, my oldest sister being 18 years older than my youngest. I used to think that I was invisible and only good for ironing and cleaning the house on Saturday mornings. But being in the middle was the biggest blessing of all. I was able to have a close relationship with my two oldest sisters and my two youngest sisters, and my brother, since were the closest in age, less than two years apart. I’m going to miss you, but look forward to when we’ll be together again. Love you, Shirley

We finished our move into the neighborhood only a couple of days before the great flood of 2016 hit, so we got to know our neighbors really fast. Two of the kindest of our new neighbors were Barbara and Charlie Smith. We enjoyed getting to know them better over the past 7 1/2 years.
When Barbara realized how sick she was, her primary concern was for her loved ones.
She asked her friends for only one thing–prayer for strength, faith and guidance. Not just for her, but for Charlie and Douglas too. She said knowing Christians were praying was the greatest comfort she could ask for.
When we last talked to her, she asked us to continue to pray for all of them. Of course we will do so.
Heaven is a little brighter today with her sweet smile, but we miss her.
