Obituary for Clayton Webb Humphreys
Retired LTC Clayton Webb Humphreys passed away on November 14, 2018 at “Sweet Home” farm in Batchelor, LA at the age of 90, cared for by his loving family. He leaves behind a legacy of service to his country, his family and his community. Born in Baton Rouge on Sep 25, 1928, Clayton moved to “New California” in upper Pointe Coupee Parish with his family in 1936, and has either lived in or owned property in the parish for most of his 90 years.
Clayton was the son of Hobson Richmond Humphreys Sr. and Lorena Debetaz Humphreys, of Batchelor. He is survived by his son, Clayton Humphreys II and wife Debbie, Bloomington IN; daughters Lt Col (Ret. USAF) Janet Humphreys New Roads; Patty Mills, New Roads; Margaret Walker and husband Keith, Denham Springs; and Christine Buhler, Watson; grandchildren, Amy Revels and husband Jason, Ft. Pierce FL; LT Drew Humphreys, USN, Portsmouth, NH; Patrick Robinson, Mineral VA; Sarah Robinson, Lafayette, LA; Michael Robinson, Seattle WA; Brandon LaCour and wife Jennifer, Batchelor; Dillon LaCour and wife Alaina, Batchelor; great grandchildren Lilly, Cash, Micah and Jace Revels, Ft. Pierce FL; Olivia LaCour and Adelynn LaCour, Batchelor. He has two living brothers, Hobson Richmond (Pic) Humphreys Jr Hickory MS; Dr. Franklin (Babe) Humphreys and wife Mae, Brandon, MS; and two beloved sisters-in-law, Ouida Humphreys, Innis, LA; and Fran Humphreys, Alexandria, LA. He is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Helen Humphreys, and an infant son, John Hobson Humphreys. He leaves behind many beloved friends and extended family.
Clayton served his country for 20 years in the US Air Force and Army. He retired in 1971 as a Lieutenant Colonel, and was awarded the Legion of Merit to recognize his outstanding career. Clayton’s second career was with the Department of Corrections as a procurement manager, retiring after 15 years. His third career was as a full time cattle farmer on "Sweet Home" farm. He served on the vestry at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Innis, LA, and on the Innis Water Board.
A memorial service will be held at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Innis, LA, on Tuesday, November 20th at 11:00 am, with Father John Miller officiating, preceded by visitation from 9:00 to 11:00 am. There will be a military honor guard, taps and flag ceremony at the graveside, and his ashes will be buried in St. Stephens Episcopal Church cemetery next to his beloved wife Helen.
The family wishes to thank the staff at BRGH Neuro/Ortho Unit, Pointe Coupee General Hospital SNF Unit and Pointe Coupee Home Health and Hospice for the excellent care in Clayton’s final days, easing his passage from this earth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 9795 Hwy 418, Innis, LA, 70747.
