Obituary for Rev. Joseph Emerald Starns

Rev. Joseph Emerald Starns (“Brother Joe”) peacefully departed the confines of his earthly body on the morning of Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the age of 89 to bask in the light of our Father’s glorious kingdom. True to style, he enjoyed one final cup of his morning coffee before setting out on his eternal journey! Brother Joe was born on July 4, 1929 in Holden, LA. He was a former longtime resident of Central, LA and resident of Holden, LA. He was a humble, kind, and joyous man whose compassion and love for others was constantly displayed through his life of public service. Brother Joe served as a firefighter with the Baton Rouge Fire Department for 29 years and retired with the rank of Captain in 1976. He then spent the next 7 years serving as a director at the Louisiana State Police Boys Camp in Holden, LA. Ultimately, Brother Joe was led to his true life calling and spent the remainder of his days preaching the word of the Lord at Springville Baptist Church, Woodhaven Baptist Church, Salem Baptist Church, and finally at Coburn Baptist Church where he remained an active member. He also served as a substitute teacher for numerous years and was affectionately called “Papa Joe”. Brother Joe always enjoyed a nice cup of coffee and piece of homemade pie, but mostly he enjoyed spending his time studying scripture and in fellowship with this family and friends. He is preceded in eternal life by his loving wife of 66 years, Nettie Watts Starns, his son, Conrad Starns, a granddaughter, Rebecca Starns, his parents, Leo and Josephine Starns, and 3 siblings, Abilene Davis, Stella Guy, and Homer Starns. Those left to cherish his memory are: 4 children, Byron Starns and wife Donna, Gary Starns and wife Gigi, Debbie Starns Alday and husband Tod, Russell Starns and wife Jennifer; daughter-in-love Rhonda Starns; 14 grandchildren, Julie Didier and husband David, Billy Tugwell and wife Cheryl, Kenneth Starns and wife Mandy, Jeremy Starns and wife Tammy, Joshua Starns and wife Candace, Ashley Huey and husband Scott, Holly Strickland and husband Eric, Jessica Debetaz and husband Brian, Jonathan Starns and wife Cassie, Heath Starns, Brett Starns, Brad Welch, Caleb Welch; 21 great-grandchildren; his brother, Dalrie Lee Starns and wife Joyce; sister-in-love Gaila Starns; numerous nieces and nephews; and his dear friend, Earline Miller Troha. Although Brother Joe will be missed by many until we meet again, we celebrate in knowing that his spirit is more alive than it has ever been and that all is well. Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation which will be held at Seale Funeral Home (20335 Texas St. Livingston, La. 70754) on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 from 9:00am to 11:00am with service to follow.
