James K ‘Jim’ Stringer, Jr passed away unexpectedly on December 10, 2021. He was born October 1, 1943 in Shreveport, La to James K and Evelyn Stringer.
He attended Istrouma High in Baton Rouge, where he played baseball and trombone, graduating in 1961. While in high school, Jim met the love of his life, Gerry Lynn Henderson Stringer. They married in 1964. During their 57 year marriage, they had two children Kimberley Opperman (husband Patrick) and John ‘Ken’ Stringer (wife Nadeska) They have 6 grandchildren, Meghan Opperman (fiancé Austin Anderson), Zachary Opperman (wife Brynn), Jorge Stringer, Joshua Opperman, Brayden Stringer and Kendall Stringer, as well as two great grandchildren, Brantley Simmons and Remi Opperman.
Jim discovered aviation, and his love of flying provided a wonderful life for his family until his retirement from Dow Chemical’s Louisiana Division as chief pilot in 2003. (Despite being able to operate multi million dollar aircraft, cell phones baffled him… he was well know for his ‘butt dials’, and not answering his phone or texts – why don’t y’all text me? Because you don’t answer & we have to go get mom) Jim’s love of flying extended to his remote controlled model aircraft and drones. He was an active member of the Baton Rouge RC Club in West Baton Rouge.
During the early years of their marriage, Gerry dragged Jim kicking and screaming to the Rocky Mountains, where Jim
found a love of jeeping & camping in their home away from home, Lake City, Colorado, in RouxFus 2.0. His love of baseball continued throughout his life, especially LSU and the Astros. He passed his love of LSU baseball on to his grandchildren.
Jim being a wonderful husband and amazing father goes without saying, but he was also a people person and never met a stranger. He loved helping his family and friends & was always the first to pitch in. If he couldn’t fix it, was it really ‘broke’!
Jim couldn’t sit still and always had a project in the works… from his motor home, to his tractors; he left many projects in the planning stages with his unexpected departure.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his older sister Patricia as well as his in-laws John and Sammie Henderson. Jim is survived by his wife Gerry and their children. He is also survived by his sister Brenda Smith (her children), and his brothers in law and their families; Jay Henderson (wife Faye), Patrick Henderson (wife Carol) and David Vonasek (wife Cooki).
Per his wishes, Jim was cremated, and his family will be holding a celebration of his life at some point in the future.
