April 18, 1929 ~ January 14, 2022

Victor Barre Berthelot, Fiddy Baby, Bo, PopPop, age 92, born April 18, 1929, passed peacefully at home on Friday, January 14, 2022. He was born at home, on family land, in what was previously called Doyle, to Vincent James and Thelma Smart Berthelot. His family later moved to the Baywood area where his father owned a grocery store/bar called “The Hole in the Road”. When he was a teen, his family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida for job opportunities. He played football for St. Pete High and graduated in 1942. He met Ruth Elizabeth Hallowell, formerly of Glouster, New Jersey, at a YMCA dance and they courted until he was drafted into the Army. Vic and Ruth married in Columbia, SC on July 7, 1951 at 7 p.m. He never saw combat because he was in the hospital with pneumonia when his unit shipped out to Korea. First son, Kenneth Dale Berthelot was born in SC, then the family moved back to St. Pete, where Kathy Jean was born. Louisiana called him back home and Brian Keith was born in Baton Rouge. He worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance until he was offered a job at WR Grace. Vic worked shift work for most of those years and retired as a supervisor at age 53. Vic and Ruth sold their house in Baker and built their retirement home in Bay St. Louis, where he loved to fish and crab in the Jordan River. He could boil those crabs just right, as all friends and family can attest. He could fix anything, a trait from his Dad. He loved making a vegetable garden and shared the bounty. They lived on the coast for 23 years until Hurricane Katrina literally blew their house away. They moved back north of Livingston, back to family land and were surrounded by their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to cook and if you were close by at breakfast, you got the full PopPop breakfast time – biscuits, tomato gravy, easy over eggs and grits. And strong Community coffee. He could make a mean gumbo too, learned from his mother. He loved his morning newspaper, especially the Jumble and Smiley Anders. Victor is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Ruth Hallowell Berthelot; daughter, Kathy Krumholt (Randy); son, Brian Keith Berthelot (Kim Sullivan Berthelot); and daughter-in-law, Kim Wilson Scullin; grandchildren, Jessica Browning Diaville (Brad), Brandon Scott Berthelot (Mary), Jennifer Krumholt Allen (Joey), Alissa Browning Collins (Daniel), Steven Randal Krumholt (Marty), Corey Allen Berthelot (Christy), Adam Wilson Berthelot, Sarah Krumholt Soldat (Christian), Paige Berthelot Willie (Erik), and Preston Craig Berthelot (Tara); 19 great-grandchildren and another on the way; 1 great great-grandchild,  Also, we can’t forget Sophie Marie and Socks, his favorite lap sitters. Preceded in death by his parents; sister, Venesse Berthelot; son, Kenneth Dale Berthelot; and grandson, Michael James Berthelot. Special thanks to the VA Urology Department and Tulane Hospital, who treated his bladder cancer, Dr. Robyn Germany at the Hammond VA, Marlene Wells and Always Best Care and the many caring folks from Bridgeway Hospice. Service at Seale Funeral Home in Livingston, Wednesday, January 19, 2022. Visitation from 10 a.m. until service at 12 p.m. by Bro. Erik Willie. Family burial at Smart Cemetery at 3 p.m. Please sign the online guestbook at www.sealefuneral.com.

I have been blessed by the whole Berthelot family over the years and experienced breakfast at “Vic’s Place” on many occasions. The world needs more people like this.
