Bettye Jean Sandifer Benton, 93, of Denham Springs, LA, passed away Monday, December 19, 2022. She was a faithful lifelong member of First Baptist Church, where she served her Lord as a Sunday School teacher. She also served her community as a Registered Nurse. Bettye was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, church member and friend and will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

Bettye is survived by her three daughters and their husbands Jennifer Underwood, Claire Barnett and husband Richard, and Grace Cortese and husband Michael; three grandsons, Dr. and Mrs. Cody (Kendra) Barnett, Anthony K. Barnett, Ragan Underwood and wife Erin; four great-grandchildren Brennan and Easton Barnett and Lawson and Benton Underwood; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Benton; parents, John and Brosia Sandifer; brother, John A. Sandifer Jr. and wife, Esther; grandson, Jeremy Kay; and son-in-law, David Underwood.

Visitation will be at First Baptist Church of Denham Springs Tuesday, December 27, from 9:30 a.m. until funeral services at the church at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Denham Springs Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dr. Cody Barnett, Anthony Barnett, Brennan Barnett, Easton Barnett, Ragan Underwood, and Richard Barnett. Honorary Pallbearers will be Buster, Scott, Todd, and Trey Quirk, Wade Welborn, Kenny Fogg, Lawson Underwood, and Benton Underwood.

    Jennifer, I’m so sorry about your mom. I just found out or I would have been there today. I will certainly be praying for you and remembering the good times we had. I remember when my mama kept you & your siblings in the church nursery….

    What a beautiful light she has shown. She had a presence above all. The kindness she showed everyone she met can not be described in words. For the family my prayers for this difficult time. Many beautiful and special memories will help each through this time.

    I’m so sorry to read about the passing of Mrs. Bettye. She was one of the sweetest people I knew. Her smile was contagious and I never saw her when she wasn’t smiling. Having grown up in Denham Springs and attending FBC, I knew her my whole life. The last time I saw her at LA Plantation she was still checking on and helping friends. She leaves a wonderful family. My thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time. May God comfort all of you as she did for so many through the years.
