    The book of Darrell
If Jesus had visited us in the last few years, I wouldn’t have been surprised to see Him next to Darrell and his giant cooking pots. Instead of the miracle of feeding the crowds from a few loaves & fishes, it would have been unlimited red beans & rice, or stewed chicken for thousands of people. A miracle may not have been required, as Darrell had probably already secured the provisions out of his own pockets or through Our Daily Bread or Helping Hands or other organizations in Darrell’s vast network. If good deeds pave our way to heaven, I have a few stepping stones to my garden. Darrell paved an entire interstate for his path.
We all have our Darrell stories, some with more pages than others. I am sure Stacy, Randy, Keegan, & Cullen each have a thick book, a Book of Darrell, in their hearts. Everyone here has their own Book of Darrell with ups & downs, laughter & tears, and stories that will be told for years.
Mine is full of laughter, disbelief at some of his antics, and amazement at what he could do with his hands and the number of people he knew. Most of which only had first names; John, Paul, George, (no Ringo I know of), Jerri, Don, Pedro, Brad, Pete, Kenny, Peggy, Paula, Linda, Scott and too many Old Men or Buddys to count. Don’t fret that I didn’t list your name, you were on his list. Friends do not need last names, thank goodness, because Darrell could slaughter surnames! Between the Croatians, Acadians, Italians, Islenos, Germans, and Hispanics, he couldn’t pronounce, must less spell their last names and lord help him with his Asian friends.
My Book of Darrell does not have a finale. We did many things together, but fishing or duck hunting trips in my boat were among the best of times. Having him aboard your boat was a giant insurance policy that no matter what happened, Darrell could fix it and get you home. He got a call once from someone having a problem with their tractor. With a fishing pole in the water, he told the guy to put the tractor on the phone. After explaining to him to start the tractor & let Darrell listen to it running, he diagnosed the problem & told him how to fix it while setting the hook and reeling in a fish. True story!
But I can envision Darrell finishing his big boat, me holding the rope on the dock as he starts the engine. As I jump aboard, he cranks up the throttle, listening to the rhythmic song of his Yanmar diesel, seeing the white foaming wake of his Mercrusier outdrive, as we head to the Chandeleur Islands, a place I have never fished. We will do it together someday.
