May 10, 1973 ~ March 10, 2021

Mark Stephen (Steve) Churay, age 47, died March 10, 2021, after a brief battle with cancer. He was a 1991 graduate of Denham Springs High School, and attended Southeastern Louisiana University. In his youth he was an Eagle Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow. A talented artist with a love of comic books, classic rock, super heroes, and Star Wars, he had an even greater love of his son Jac Churay and the love of his life Lisa Petrere. We are thankful that his suffering wasn’t long and drawn out, but his loss is one that will always remain. He is also survived by his mother, Linda H Churay, sisters Elisa Vinson (Chris), Elizabeth Matherne (Robbie), nieces and nephews Abby Vinson, Ben Vinson, Aubrey Matherne, and Evan Matherne, Goddaughter Abigail Bernard, and Ethan Burkette. He is preceded in death by his father, Mark K Churay. Viewing will be held 9-10:30am Saturday, March 13, at Seale Funeral Home, 1720 S Range Ave, Denham Springs followed by funeral mass at 11am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 865 Hatchell Lane, Denham Springs. We invite those in attendance to dress in casual attire that honor his interests in comic book arts and Star Wars. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hero Initiative www.heroinitiative.org. Thanks to the staff of Baton Rouge General Bluebonnet and Carpenter House for their care and compassion.

Robin, sorry you found out this way. If I happen upon that 8″ Snap On Wrench I’ll think about you. If you come to New Orleans, we’ll show you around and toast my brother – you can find me pretty easy on social media and msg me…Elisa

OMG! We worked together at ADC in Austin for a few years. Almost 20 years ago! Debbie sez we “saved each other’s lives a few times”. That’s only a bit of an exaggeration; it was that kind of job. He loved my 8″ Snap-on wrench; his parents bought him his own that Christmas. I helped him write his resignation letter; it’s still on my computer. He was always going to show me around New Orleans, but it never happened. I lost touch with him for years when my phone fell in the toilet and lost all of its memory. And then after all these years, I found his contact info again! But it led me to this; too late. Sorry Steve, you are missed, more than you can imagine. ;(

I am so saddened by this, I cannot begin to describe it. Steve has been mine and my husband’s friend for over 30 years. Some of my fondest memories – camping out for Star Wars Phantom Menace tickets – going to comic book conventions – talking about comics and star wars – and just hanging out – included him. This world is a lesser place without him in it, but Heaven is better for it. I’m sure he is talking the ears off of Jack Kirby, Will Eisner, Bob Kane, and many others. I’m so sorry to see you leave us too soon – May the Force Be With You! You will be missed.

Never met Mark, but had quite a few chats on Twitter and in various chats with him. His passions for comics and Star Wars were legendary, and i will miss sharing them with him. My prayers will be with his loved ones tonight.

I met Steve when I was working at Jokur’s Palace, a comic book store. That was the first job I ever had. Steve and I shared a passion for comics, films, and above all, Star Wars. He was one of the few people I knew who knew as much about that galaxy far, far away as I do. We even camped out together for tickets to Episode I. Hanging out with him and the other comic book geeks from Jokur’s Palace, eating pizza and talking about super heroes, films, or Star Wars are some of my fondest memories. May the Force be with you good buddy.
