Elgene Edward Hood, age 95, lifelong resident of Denham Springs, LA, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, August  24, 2022. He passed away peacefully at his home, on his hill, on his terms. He had an amazing optimism and joy for life; to him everything was just “wonderful.” He loved the outdoors, spending time in his garden, and tending his orange trees. He had a deep love for music and spent many hours playing his guitar. In his younger years he was an avid golfer, hunter, and fisherman. He is survived by son Ed, and wife Gwen Hand Hood; daughters and sons-in-law Sarah Ann and Chuck Spangler, Jean and Rick Varnado, and son-in-law Jimmy Crowder. Grandchildren John Thomas Spangler (Wendy), Joseph Spangler (Bambi); Matt Varnado (Christine), Josh Varnado, Riley Varnado (Shelley);  Andrew Hood (Lauren), Travis Hood (Chelsea),  Allison Hood Crousillac (Taylor);  Beth Ann Crowder Hosse (Trebor); Landon Crowder (Renee); Rachel Crowder Hosse (Alex); 10 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Mary Ann Benton and Sarah Sullivan; brother-in-law Ray Riley (Jackie), and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Frances Riley Hood; daughter Debbie Hood Crowder; parents Clyde Hood and Oma Tyler Hood; brother Donald Ray Hood and wife Natalie; brothers-in-law Robert “Tut” Benton and Donald Sullivan.

A special thank you to caregiver and friend Carla Hughes, for her unceasing love and devotion, and to her wonderful family.

Mr. Elgene and his family hold a special place in my heart and my childhood memories. He was the last man standing of the group of men who regularly played music together with my dad. I am a lucky lady to have seen my dad play music not just with Mr. Elgene but also his father, Clyde Hood, and his grandfather, “Ollie” Hood. Those days are among my most precious memories.

My condolences to all of his family and special hugs to dear friend, Sarah Ann. May your memories give you comfort. Love you all.
